Who am I ?
Hello, I am Luuk Simons, a student in Narrative Illustration and Animation at St. Joost-Breda.
As a creator, I am deeply fascinated by how stories through different media are constructed and put together. What process was needed to attain each different result, what use cases they grant, and how this influences the telling of the story itself. I apply this knowledge and observations directly to my work.
My strength lies in creating stories through expressive spaces/locations, character design, and prop design.
For me, these things are not merely decoration; they form the visual backbone of any scene; providing clues about context, location, and atmosphere. Every small detail contributing to a compelling overall experience. Whilst also emphasizing the lesson, that realism often lies in imperfections and subtle details.
I have a strong affinity for various tools and materials, with a particular preference for my pencil and paintbrush. Through drawing, painting and or sculpting, I lay out the physical foundation which I then can bring it into the digital realm. Here I get the opportunity to further adapt, refine, and enhance it. This hybrid approach creates a balance between control and chance, between precision and handcraft – resulting in work that is rooted in craftsmanship and elevated by digital tools.
Humor is also an important element in my work. It creates a sense of playfulness and light-heartedness, even within difficult themes, making it a powerful storytelling tool. Humor can appear as a subtle detail, an unexpected shape, or a small visual joke that takes a few seconds to land. These visual gags spark both my and the viewer’s curiosity and imagination.
Ultimately, my goal is to entertain and engage the audience. Whether through immersive environments, small visual jokes, or carefully crafted details, I aim to create experiences that invite viewers to explore, smile, and momentarily lose themselves in the worlds I build.
